Two for Tuesday
After a quick one week break in my newly named Two for Tuesday, I'm back today. Today's topic - Two Things I Didn't Know About Running a Business Until I Started One:
1. Payroll taxes
I never really understood how this worked, even though it has always been taken out of my checks. Luckily, I have a great CPA (Richard Reedman) who has succeeded in walking me through it. Even though I knew that my checks to Clay, my GM, were only paying for part of the ultimate payoff, it was still a surprise to pay the Feds and North Carolina at the end of our first quarter of business. I didn't have it put into my proforma the way it should have been.
2. The Capriciousness of Insurance Companies
Now, take this one with a grain of salt. As a physician, a lot of my headaches come from insurance companies. And, as one of the partners in my practice, I understand that paying for employees' insurance is increasingly expensive. But when I signed Clay up for health insurance with Blue Cross, I was given a quote - a pretty fair one, too, given Clay's age and general good health (he's a personal trainer, after all!). So, I paid the first month's premium in December, then got January's bill with over a 15% increase! When I called the information at BCBS, I learned that they change the rates at the end of the year, no matter how long the customer has been insured. Nice! I sign up, get a quote, and the number changes 30 days in.

I have to give you a link to my current favorite commercials (a second Twofer):

Those commercials are great- I've never seen them before.
